The nineties

The nineties: Expanding our horizons

Making the leap across the pond: sortimat established a sales office in Atlanta in 1992 to provide the best possible customer care in the US. At HQ in Winnenden, space was increased from 2,000 to 7,000 square meters in 1994. Reaching another milestone, sortimat earned its quality management certification to ISO 9001 in 1995. In 1997, a German-Indian joint venture was established in Chinchwad near Mumbai and the company completed its acquisition of Schaumburg-based Camron.

In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years' imprisonment. 1994 saw Yitzhak Rabin, Yassir Arafat and Shimon Peres in rare harmony as they were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1997, Scotland introduced Dolly, the world's first cloned sheep. In 1998, Gerhard Schröder ended Helmut Kohl's 16-year reign as German Chancellor. The Federal German Government sent troops abroad for the first time in 1994, to help peace-keeping operations in Kosovo. In 1997, J K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone kick-started Potter mania. And in 1999, one and a half million Techno fans partied in the Berlin Tiergarten at the Love Parade.
