The eighties

The eighties: Nothing is more constant than change

In 1988, sortimat welcomed two new managing directors: Hans-Dieter Baumtrog and Ulrich Klöpfer took the helm and continued to steer the company into international waters. The company's 150 employees generated sales of €7 million and focused on assembly machines for the manufacture of medical and pharmaceutical products. In order to guarantee short lead times, more space and personnel were required. A new assembly hall with a capacity of 1,200 square meters was officially opened in 1989.

In 1981, Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev dismantled the iron curtain by introducing Perestroika and Glasnost, and led the way towards the end of the Soviet Union and the Cold War. The art world mourned the death of Joseph Beuys in 1986 and a year later witnessed the sale of van Gogh's "Sunflowers" for € 37 million. In 1988, a genetically modified mouse was patented in the USA, and in 1989, the German people, separated for so long by different political systems, were reunited when the Berlin Wall came down.
