Additional technologies
A competent and proven supplier of assembly systems, sortimat integrates several additional technologies (mechanical or electrical) into a unique assembly process: paperbanding, printing, vision control, dosing, filling, labelling, hot sealing, tip forming, verification, tube coiling, cutting, stamping, welding, packaging, feeding and many others.

Assembly
The action of putting something together is called assembly. sortimat assembly machines automatically put together different pharmaceutical products, medical products or cosmetic products. Automatic assembly is a procedure done by assembly machines alone, semi-automatic assembly is a combination of assembly machines and manual operations. Assembly is used in almost every industry. Products are put together using assembly technologies such as pick-and-place, pressing, dispensing of UV-adhesive, solvent bonding, heat sealing, ultrasonic welding. Additional assembly technologies such as laser marking, siliconizing, punching, winding and unwinding are used within the assembly process as well.

Assembly automation
Assembly automation is the automatic operation of equipment which puts together manufactured components to form a finished product. A sortimat assembly machine is built upon automatic operations. sortimat is the market leader in the production of fully-automated and semi-automated assembly systems for medical products and pharmaceutical products. For the pharmaceutical industry the sortimat automatic assembly equipment can be designed to fulfill qualification requirements and to meet the technical requirements of the 21 CFR part 11 regulations. 

Assembly equipment
Assembly equipment is defined as machines that assemble parts or components to form a product. It can be either an assembly machine or an assembly system. Assembly systems are interlinked assembly machines that perform complex assembly processes. sortimat produces assembly equipment for medical products and pharmaceutical products. Assembly machine
A sortimat assembly machine is a production system for the assembly of small products in several industries. sortimat focuses on the medical industry, the pharmaceutical industry and cosmetics industries. Examples of medical products are  a cannula, a syringe, a catheter or an infusion set. We consider an asthma inhaler a pharmaceutical product. sortimat has also produced several assembly machines for cosmetic products: for example, lotion pumps, aerosol valves and much more.

Assembly machines
Assembly machines are mechanical devices that put together manufactured parts to form a completed product. At sortimat assembly machines are production systems for the assembly of small products for the medical industry, pharmaceutical industry or cosmetics industry; for example, assembly machines for syringes, catheters, infusion sets, inhalers for asthma or diagnostic devices.

Assembly systems
A sortimat assembly system consists of interlinked assembly machines to form a complete production system. The interlinked assembly machines can be the flexible and modular Jetwing system, an indexing dial or a linear transfer machine.  All of these assembly platforms can be combined to build a tailor-made production system.

Assembly technology
Assembly technology is defined as a group of digital or electronic processes which are employed to put together manufactured parts to form a completed product. Assembly technology is not only putting together parts, it includes testing, welding, dosing, gluing, marking, inspection, vision control, filling, labeling, packaging, tip forming, paper-banding and much more. sortimat is the market leader in assembly technology for medical products and pharamceutical products. 2,500 assembly machines of experience guarantee that sortimat assembly technology leads the way in innovation, know-how and quality.

ATS
stands for Automation Tooling Systems. Headquarter of the Canadian company is Cambridge in Ontario.

Automatic
Automatic is defined as a self-regulating device or action. Today, the assembly process of products for the medical industry, pharmaceutical or cosmetics industry is fully-automatic. For example, asthma devices or diagnostic devices need to be assembled with fully-automatic processes.

Automation
Automation is the automatic operation of equipment, processes or systems. Using automatic processes, a medical device or a pharmaceutical product can be assembled in high quantities and quality, especially by a sortimat assembly machine. A medial device or a pharmaceutical product can be automatically assembled in a better clean room environment than would be possible to achieve with a manual assembly process. Today automation is indispensable to get validated processes and qualified products in the medical industry or the pharmaceutical industry.

Belt hopper (s)
Belt hoppers belong to the loading systems. Like vibratory hoppers and elevators they smoothly feed bowl feeders with parts.

Birkman
This turnkey feeder unit is configured to individual customer specifications. For example, as a bowl or step feeder with a handling unit and control system. The Birkman arrives fully assembled – just plug and play.

Birkmannsweiler
In Germany, near Stuttgart, in Winnenden-Birkmannsweiler are two subsidiaries of ATS located: sortimat Assembly Technology Niederlassung der ATS Automation Tooling Systems GmbH and sortimat Feeder Technology Niederlassung der ATS Automation Tooling Systems GmbH.

Bowl feeder
A sortimat vibratory bowl feeder is sorting bulk parts by using the principle of resonant frequency vibration. Vibratory bowl feeders are powered by a encapsulated electro-magnetic coil driving through a series of laminated fibre glass respectively steel leaf springs. The solid base vibrates in resonance with the top platform and bowl, which creates high levels of directional drive. Other types of feeders are linear feeders, drum feeders, step feeders, tray handler or the complete feeding unit “Birkman” which are part of the sortimat production as well.

Bowl feeders
Bowl feeders are cylindrical or conical-shaped devices which vibrate to orient and load parts into a machine. sortimat bowl feeders are either used to feed components on sortimat assembly systems or sold to the machine building industry. They are built at the sortimat production site in
Winnenden, Germany.

Checks
There are two check methods: with or without product contact. Dimensions, presence, position can be checked but also on demand leakage, flow and tension tests can be carried out (for example for valves, cannulas and medical tube sets).

Chicago
The American ATS sortimat affiliate is located near Chicago, in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

Cleanroom
A cleanroom is an enclosed production space where the particles in the air are reduced to a certain extent. The clean room classification according to the international standards defines how many particles of each size are allowed within a certain volume of air. It is especially important for medical products and pharmaceutical products such as syringes, catheters, insulin pens, inhalers and auto injectors to be produced and assembled in a clean room. Every sortimat machine is suited to work under clean room conditions.

Clearliner
This is the latest addition to the sortimat feeder technology range. The volume-produced tray handler Clearliner is modular, cost-efficient, standardized, and easy to integrate. Trays can be quickly loaded, unloaded, and exchanged, while the machine is still in operation.

Controls
Freely programmable controls can be combined with process data acquisition (PDA) systems via an Ethernet interface, as required.

Cosmetic
Cosmetics are one of the main focuses of sortimat, next to the medical and the pharmaceutical industries. Numerous cosmetic and body care products are manufactured on sortimat machines, like deodorant sticks, dosing pumps for soap spenders, aerosol valves, perfume valves, toothpaste spenders and many others.

Cutting, punching and pressing 
Metal or plastic filters and foils are punched. Furthermore, we remove the part from the die before it is passed on for downstream processing.

Diagnostic
sortimat is specialist for manufacturing assembly machines for diagnostic devices, such as tubes for blood analysis.

Discovery
Discovery is a new series of standardized sortimat rotary indexing machines. The Discovery series offers a 12, 16 or 20-station standard dial. sortimat can also create made-to-measure solutions, including automatic twelve-track production or combine two or more assembly machines into an assembly system. With this new modular series, automation projects can be delivered faster to the customer and therefore reduce the time-to-market.

Drum feeder
The drum feeder is a volume-produced, economic and space-saving solution, ideal for small parts that easily become tangled or statically charged. It also includes a variety of features unique to sortimat, such as custom drum lengths, direct drive, and cleanroom capability.

Dosing, filling
Liquids of all kinds, including adhesives, solvents, and silicon oils, need to be precisely dosed - drawn in a line, or applied to a particular point or area. Microdosing of liquid reagents and powders is carried out using technology specially developed for each particular task. Stand-alone filling machines can also be integrated into the production process.

Elevator (s)
The sortimat elevators are very efficient feeding systems. Their main advantage is the low filling height, the great volume and the speed with which the bowl feeders can be filled. Depending on the selection of the conveyor belt, they can feed light plastic parts as well as heavy steel parts and every intermediate shape and weight. Further loading systems are the vibratory hoppers or belt hoppers.

Feeder
A sortimat vibratory bowl feeder sorts bulk parts using the principle of resonant frequency vibration. Feeder technology 
Individual parts of all shapes and sizes are fed using sortimat bowl feeders, step feeders, needle magazines, glass syringe removal machines, tray handlers, drum feeders and unstacking systems, in preparation for downstream processes.

Feeder Technology
sortimat acts on two distinct fields: assembly technology and feeder technology. The feeding technology manufactures end-to-end units like Birkman and systems which sort bulk products and bring them in correct position to downstream handling processes. Among the feeding devices are bowl feeders, step feeders, tray handler Clearliner, conveyors, hoppers and elevators. As accessories are available:  noise-insulating hoods, control units, and the multi controller, the sortimat controller for Birkman and all other smaller systems.

Flexibility
There is a demand for flexibility in every step of the product lifecycle. Flexibility is essential for an automation company, it does not matter if it manufactures pharmaceutical machinery or medical machinery for products  such as a syringe, an inhaler, a catheter, an infusion set or a cannula or cosmetic products, like a lotion pump or an aerosol valve. sortimat ’s standardized machine platform module Jetwing is the epitome of flexibility..

Fully automatic
sortimat assembly machines are fully automatic, without any manpower, except an operator at the control panel. Manual stations integrated in the assembly machine Jetwing can at any time be exchanged against a fully automatic feeding and/or assembly stations.

Hot sealing, tip forming
A variety of products can be hot sealed with foil to an extremly high degree of accuracy. Tip forming applications include thermal moulding of catheter tips of up to 28 gauge.

Indexing dial / round table
sortimat uses indexed dial systems as an assembly platform for the assembly of medical products, pharmaceutical products or cosmetics products. Vibratory feeders are used for sorting and linear feeders for transporting the oriented components to the round table, where the assembly process takes place.

Inhaler
An inhaler is a drug delivery device. An aerosol inhaler uses an aerosol propellant to self-administer the medicine. A dry powder inhaler spreads the medicine during the inhalation process to the lungs. sortimat is specialized in the production of assembly systems for all kind of inhalers.

Inhalers
Inhalers are drug delivery devices. Aerosol inhalers use an aerosol propellant to self-administer the medicine. There are also dry powder inhalers which spread the medicine during the inhalation process to the lungs. sortimat specializes in the production of assembly systems for all kinds of inhalers.

Jetwing
The sortimat Jetwing is a flexible machine platform for the assembly of small parts. The sortimat Jetwing consists of an assembly platform, standard stations and a transfer systems. It is a highly flexible assembly system which can be adapted to increasing production quantities. The sortimat Jetwing is suited for medical products, pharmaceutical products and cosmetic products with a rather short product lifecycle. Jetwing can be also adapted to new products very quickly and has a great reusability. Processes like sorting systems (feeder technology by vibratory bowl feeders, linear feeders and step feeders), welding, laser marking, dosing, and robot integration are well-suited for the sortimat Jetwing.

Labelling
Labels are applied to products of all shapes and sizes. If required, a printing system and visual checks are available.

Linear assembly
Beside the modular assembly machine Jetwing and the indexing table machine Discovery, the linear transfer Spaceline is also a fully automatic, cam-driven assembly machine that can be interlinked to an assembly system. On this platform the assembly operations take place on both side of the line. sortimat assembles infusion sets, transfusion sets, 6” tails, dialysis sets and many other products exclusively on Spaceline machines.

Linear conveyor
The linear conveyor transfers the parts in correct position. Within its feeding technology, sortimat supplies linear conveyors in the range SML40 and SML 80.

Linear transfer
A track which transports pallets or parts in a straight line is called linear transfer. Coming from a bowl feeder the part is carried to the dial by a linear transfer. The so-called linear feeder can be found on almost every assembly system made by sortimat. A linear transfer is also used to interlink sortimat assembly machines to an assembly system.

Loading systems
Loading systems feed bulk products without orientation. Various devices belong to the loading systems: belt hoppers, vibratory hoppers and elevators. At sortimat, the loading devices feed bowl feeders and step feeders precisely and smoothly.

Marking 
Products are printed, marked and stamped using a variety of technologies, including hot stamping, laser marking, and offset, inkjet or tampo printing systems.

Medical
Medical means being related to the study or practice of medicine. Medical products play a great role in the assembly industry. The assembly of medical products is highly complex because those parts tend to be very small and need to be assembled under clean room conditions. Also, validation / qualification may be required to receive FDA approval of the medical product.

Medical assembly
Medical assembly - this is what our customers do with sortimat assembly machines. About 80% of our assembly machines were built for medical products and for pharmaceutical products. A small percentage goes into the cosmetics industry and in other industries, as for example automotive and electric. Examples of medical assemblies are: a safety syringe, an IV- catheter, an insulin pen, a pen cannula, an infusion set, a drip chamber or simple connectors such as luer locks, y-pieces or stop cocks.

Medical device
A medical device is a product for drug delivery methods or medical situations. Medical devices need to be sorted and assembled in clean rooms. The assembly platforms need to be designed to fulfill clean room requirements by using special materials, such as stainless steel. Specially-designed vibratory feeders called bowl feeders sort the medical device. Medical components are fed to the actual assembly machine by a linear feeder where the medical device is assembled.

Medical disposables
Medical disposables are single use drug delivery devices. Today medical disposables such as disposable syringes or catheters are used word-wide. sortimat produces fully-automatic assembly machines for medical disposables, supporting the trend toward fewer accidental disease transmissions.

Medical products
Some examples of medical products at sortimat, are infusion sets, transfusion sets, IV- catheters, dental cannulas and pen cannulas, syringes (insulin syringes or safety syringes) and much more. sortimat produces automatic assembly equipment for many kinds of medical products.

Medicine
Medicine is one of the main focuses of sortimat, next to the cosmetic and the pharmaceutical industries. Many medical products are manufactured on sortimat assembly machines.

Micro technology
The term micro technology covers microscopic sized electronic and digital products and systems. sortimat produces assembly systems and feeder systems for micro technology products, for example, electronic products or medical products which need a precision assembly system or require a special clean room. All sortimat assembly machines are designed to work under clean room conditions (ISO class 8). Assembly systems can be designed for ISO class 5 as well.

Modular
Modular means being segmented or fragmented into compact units. The flexible assembly platform, Jetwing, is a new modular type of sortimat production platform. Modules on the Jetwing platform can be exchanged, and within a short period of time the assembly of a product can be modified or extended.

Multicontroller
sortimat’s Multicontroller is ideal for end-to-end Birkman feeder system as well as for smaller systems. Equipped with defined interfaces, the Multicontroller enables a quick start by plug and play.

Packaging
Both primary packaging machines (e.g. for blister and tube packaging) and secondary packaging machines for cartons can be seamlessly integrated.

Packaging machine
Packaging or filling machines are often integrated in sortimat’s assembly systems. For example, an assembly machine for infusion sets to which a blister packaging machine has been added. Also a carton packaging machine has been integrated to a sortimat assembly machine.

Paper banding
Coiled tubes can be banded with paper. They are placed on bands laid in the nest before the ends are glued in place.

Pharma / Pharmacy
Pharmacy is one of the main focuses of sortimat, next to the medical and the cosmetic industries.

Pharmaceutical
Pharmaceutical means being related to the study or practice of pharmacy. Pharmaceutical products are any kind of medicine and “packaging” products, which contain medicine, such as inhalers, auto injectors or powder injectors. sortimat produces fully and semi-automated assembly systems for pharmaceutical products such as multi dose powder inhalers, aerosol inhalers and pre-filled syringes or auto injectors.

Pharmaceutical assembly
sortimat ’s customers are mainly involved in pharmaceutical assembly and medical assembly. They assemble pharmaceutical products on sortimat assembly systems. Examples of pharmaceutical products are dry powder inhalers, aerosol inhalers, auto injectors, filled glass syringes, diagnostic devices and much more.

Pharmaceutical machinery
A system that produces pharmaceutical products is called pharmaceutical machinery. sortimat produces pharmaceutical machinery when the product needs to be assembled. Additional functions, as welding, bonding, dosing, filling, packaging or marking, labeling, testing operations will be integrated in the assembly process or directly interlinked to the assembly machine. sortimat acts as a system integrator in the field of pharmaceutical machinery.

Production equipment
At sortimat, machines or devices that manufacture parts belong to production equipment. Terms like assembly equipment, assembly machine, assembly system or production system can be used instead. sortimat manufactures production equipment for all kinds of products ranging from automotive parts to medical devices or pharmaceutical products.

Production systems
Productions systems are a series of machines that manufacture components or parts. sortimat produces fully automated and semi-automated assembly systems primarily for medical products and pharmaceutical products. sortimat production systems are based on either a flexible and modular Jetwing platform, an indexing dial concept or a linear transfer concept.

Qualification
With its total commitment to precision and quality, sortimat has generated a validation process that meets all FDA requirements. sortimat offers a cost-effective method for the validation of processes and the qualification of systems. As part of qualification services, sortimat offers qualification documentation. This includes the qualification project plan and the general part, design qualification, including risk assessment, installation qualification, operational qualification and support with performance qualification.

Robots
Robots can also be integrated to the modular assembly systems Jetwing making them still more flexible and modular.

Rolling Meadows
The American ATS sortimat’s subsidiary is located near Chicago, in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

Round table / indexing dial
sortimat uses indexed dial systems as an assembly platform for the assembly of medical products, pharmaceutical products or automotive products. Vibratory feeders are used for sorting and linear feeders for transporting the oriented components to the round table, where the assembly process takes place.

Screwing 
With servo motors, any screwing task can be carried out to a high level of accuracy, including defined torque, depth and angle.

Semi-automatic
A semi-automatic machine is a device which is self-regulating, but requires a manual operation. sortimat’s modular assembly system, Jetwing, can easily be used for semi-automatic processes. The assembly machine will be designed so that manual workstations can be set-up along the conveyor belt. Semi-automatic assembly machines can save time and costs when a new product needs to be launched quickly onto the market. Jetwing can be extended to a fully-automatic assembly system when more production capacity is required.

Shaft feeder
Shaft feeders operate on the basis of air cushions and, thanks to the open design of the output section, can be easily integrated into any production system. In many cases, there is no need for a handling unit for parts transfer.

sortimat – an ATS affiliate
In June 2010 sortimat was integrated into the Canadian company ATS Automation Tooling Systems. As a part of the ATS organization sortimat designs and manufactures custom-made, high-speed, precision automated assembly systems. sortimat production systems guarantee high-quality performance, which is needed for medical assembly and pharmaceutical devices, and also for precision assembly processes or micro technology processes in other industries.

Sorting system
Sorting systems sort bulk parts and bring them in correct position to downstream machines. Various devices belong to the sorting systems: end-to-end Birkman feeder units, bowl feeders, drum feeders, step feeders, palletizers, conveyors, hoppers, elevators, control units and multi controllers. The multi controller is the sortimat control unit for Birkman and other smaller systems.

Spaceline
The first extendible assembly platform with up to 54 stations for assembling complex products in large quantities. This is a unique product featuring an innovative twin-drive concept for indexed synchronically re-circulation movements. Moreover, the system is extremely precise, fast, and flexible.

Step feeder
A low-noisesystem that sorts components as they progress up a series of steps. sortimat step feeders are extremely easy to clean and can be constructed for use in cleanrooms up to class 1000.

Syringes
sortimat produces assembly machines for syringes, which belong to the medical devices / medical products category. From insulin syringes with cannulas up to 31 G to diverse safety syringes to veterinarian syringes or simple two-component-syringes, sortimat developed the assembly technology for these assembly machines. Bonding / gluing processes, vision inspection of the needle tip, dosing of silicone are generally used. They are called assembly technologies. Syringe assembly machines need to be designed for clean room usage.

Technology
Generally, technology is defined as electronic or digital products and systems considered as a group. At sortimat, technology represents great demands for leadership in assembly technology and feeder technology know-how. Examples of assembly technologies are dosing, marking, testing, inspection, packaging, filling, welding, and feeding, labeling, tube coiling technologies.

Testing
We offer contact and non-contact tests and checks that verify dimensions, presence and position of components. We can also integrate tightness, occlusion, and pull tests (e.g. for valves, cannulas and infusion sets), as required.

Tip forming
Tip forming is effected by a high frequency oscillator which vibrates a mould pressed onto the catheter needle tip and forms it up to 28 G.

Tray handler Clearliner
The latest addition to the sortimat feeder-technology range. The volume-produced tray handler Clearliner is modular, cost-efficient, standardized, and easy to integrate. Trays can be quickly loaded, unloaded, and exchanged, while the machine is still in operation.

Tube coiling 
sortimat products are able to process tubes of almost any type and diameter, from heparin tubes to ribbed urine tubes. The tubes are coiled in a number of ways and cut to the exact length required.

Validation

The vibratory feeder is the most important feeding device at sortimat. It is used in end-to-end- feeder systems for all kinds of parts, that need an assembly process. sortimat is specialized in the production of vibratory feeders and assembly machines for medical products and pharmaceutical products: many are critical

Vibratory feeders
Vibratory feeders are used at sortimat to feed and orient bulk material for the assembly process. They are also called bowl feeders or vibratory bowl feeders. The vibratory feeder vibrates at a certain frequency, as well as the linear feeder.

Vibratory Hopper
They belong to the loading systems like belt hoppers and elevators. sortimat’s vibratory hoppers feed the bowl feeders with bulk parts which enable to extend the filling intervals. The constant filling level (quantity and volume) ensures a regular and uniform function of the bowl feeder. The result is a better process safety and a cost reduction. sortimat’s vibratory hoppers are available in 3 volumes: 10, 20 and 50 l.

Vision systems
Visual quality checks are performed using vision systems, comprising a camera, lighting, and software for precise evaluation of the captured image. If required, glass nests can also be used.

Welding 
When it comes to integrating ultrasonic welding technology, we collaborate closely with our technology partners. If required, protective foil can be used to ensure products are not contaminated during welding. Laser welding is employed for metal products.

21 CFR Part 11
21 CFR part 11 is an abbreviation for Title 21 Code of Federal Regulation part 11. The 21 CFR part 11 guidelines were issued by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and began to be enforced in 1997. 21 CFR part 11 refers to the handling of electronic records and signatures on production equipment. 21 CFR 11 defines requirements for the permanent storage of electronic data. It is essential to fulfill the requirements of 21 CFR 11 for the sale of pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical production systems on the US-market.
